Albert Camus adalah pengarang berdarah Prancis yang lahir di Mondovi, Aljazair, pada 7 November 1913. Camus menghabiskan tahun-tahun awal hidupnya di Aljazair. Setelah meraih gelar sarjana filsafat dari Universitas Algiers, dia bekerja sebagai wartawan. Dia kemudian bermukim di Paris. Dari 1935 hingga 1938 dia memimpin kelompok teater L’Equipe. Selama Perang Dunia II dia menjadi salah satu penulis Gerakan Perlawanan di Paris dan editor surat kabar bawah tanah Combat. Di antara karya-karya utamanya adalah empat karya fiksi yang dipuji secara luas, Orang Asing (L’Étranger, 1946), La Peste (1948), Kejatuhan (La Chute, 1956), dan kumpulan cerpen L’exil et le royaume (1958); dan dua buku esai filosofis, L’Homme révolté (1954) dan Le Mythe de Sisyphe (1955). Camus dianugerahi Nobel Sastra pada 1957 saat baru berumur 44 tahun—pemenang termuda kedua sepanjang sejarahnya hingga saat itu. Dia wafat pada 4 Januari 1960 akibat kecelakaan mobil.
